ABOUT

The creation of Maui Spearfishing Academy (MSA) stems from a rich passion for both the sport of fishing, as well as a love for the reef and its inhabitants throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

For over 40 years, the Twitchell family has been active in recreational diving and fishing on West Maui. Bobby Twitchell, the founder of MSA and Maui native, learned to recognize the nearby coastline as a renewable source of food and fun.

Having earned a degree in Education from Arizona State University, Bobby knew he could combine his love for the Hawaiian waters and extensive knowledge in the sport of spear fishing to teach people how to spearfish. Through the combined efforts of the Twitchell family, and friends, MSA was born.

All of the guides at MSA have been trained in the same freediving techniques as the top American freedivers, and have years of experience fishing our coastline. We offer the most up to date safety and diving knowledge available. All our guests will know how to not only dive safe during our lesson, but for future free dives as well.

Our guests will learn about our delicate reef inhabitants and how they can help further a culture of sustainable activities on our islands. We do this in part by almost ENTIRELY targeting invasive species known to be harmful to our reef systems.

Our guests will leave with a deep understanding of our exciting sport of freediving/spearfishing, and know they got to be a part of so much more than they expected when they first signed up!

Spearfishing 101

We typically begin our adventure at 7:00 a.m. at All About Fish, just north of Ka'anapali on West Maui, where you will be provided quality spearfishing gear. Equipment Includes; Gun, Basic Mask, Snorkel, Basic Fins, Upper-Body Wet Suit, Weight Belt, Gloves.

•Eat breakfast before hand and drink plenty of water. You can pack a lunch, though you should probably save the sandwich meat for another day and make use of the local knowledge of the best places to eat in town.

•Shave that stubble! We would never ask you to lose that mustache though; we have a trick to help with leaky masks due to facial hair.
